@#%&! (but some happy things too)

retro rib socks

Me and luxury needles, apparently we don't go together very well. This time I didn't even get very far before the fateful snap. Totally annoying. (The pattern is Retro Rib Socks from IK winter 2004, and the yarn is Regia Silk.)

tilkkuja

On a happier note, I'm very much in love with my log cabin squares. I love playing with all these cheerful colours, I love the yarn (Rowan Handknit DK Cotton), and I love love love the look of garter stitch. Me and log cabin squares = happiness. (Me and sock knitting with expensive, deceitful luxury needles such as rosewood or ebony = misery.*)

tilkkuja2

Aion tehdä tilkuista vauvanpeiton, jossa on yhdeksän tilkkua. Haussa olisikin halvempi puuvillalanka, jossa on loistava värivalikoima. Ehdotuksia?

My plan is to knit nine squares, and make a baby blanket. I would like to make a bigger blanket (like this gorgeous one), but I can't afford it, not with this yarn. So I'm knitting this baby sized blanket first, and then I'll go shopping for some cheaper cotton yarn that has lots of great colours. Any suggestions?

kalassa

On another happier note, my parents took me fishing, and we got a HUGE pike! Well, my dad got it, but I was sitting right next to him. I was very excited, as you can see (sort of, that flickr mosaic maker cropped my grin :-D), and my dad was just content, because he's a real fisher and he has caught bigger ones. Happy times!

* I think that I should add that I am a tight knitter. So maybe it's not the needles, but the knitter.

hey, that's one big fish!

you are not alone in snapping expensive needles. i broke a 2.5mm ebony dpn 5 minutes into the knitting, and the lady in the shop insisted it was my own fault (for knitting to tightly), apparently she could tell from the way it broke. i was surprised the ebony was so soft; i've since had better luck with bamboo dpns that size.

I love the colors you are using on the log cabin. How big is your center square?
I love the border you are putting on each square and that there are not too many "logs" in each of them. Looks very clean.

Those look like some fun squares. The blanket is going to turn out great.

oooh, you and luxury needles... i haven't broken mine (yet), but for the same reason, i'm not allowed to own cashmere. i'm afraid some bugs would find it and eat it. i'll let them eat the cheap stuff instead ;) the log cabin blocks are very pretty. elann.com often has some cottons on the inexpensive side, but i don't know if they ship international.

voe rähmä noita puikkoja! No, tiukalla käsialalla voi olla vaikutus. Sain miekin yhden bambusukkiksen katkeamaan kun väliin neuloin vähän tiukempaa..

makean näköinen mökkitilkkupeitto on tulossa :)

I knit loosely but I snapped all my birch size 1 dps (I kept sanding down the broken ends, using smaller and smaller pieces!)--I had to change to metal. However, Brittany sent me replacements--no charge.

Growing up, our black cats were always called Musti--related to Mustaa?

Hienoja action-kalastuskuvia!

:-)

A cotton recommendation--Valley Yarns Longmeadow from WEBS. It's their knockoff of Rowan's All Seasons Cotton (60% cotton, 40% microfiber). I'm knitting a baby gift with it right now and am really pleased with it--and it's only 2.49 US$ a ball!

Your poor snapped needle makes me sad for you, and also reminds me why I am not allowed to buy expensive DPNS :(

Noista neliöistähän tulee ihan hyvälle mielelle. Maanantaiaamu pelastettu, kiitos!

Sorry to see the needle accident. I have the same colour of regia silk, saving it to knit socks for my husband. That's one big fish!

That fish is huge and it looks like you're having so much fun. Sorry to hear about the dpns.

I ordered some Elann Endless Summer Collection Sonata for my Log Cabin Blanket. I haven't used it yet - still waiting for the stuff to come but I have seen it in person & think it is nice. Lots of colors and you can't beat $2 a ball.

Ihania tilkkuja! Texere yarnsilta löytyy muistaakseni edullisia puuvillalankoja ja värejäkin on, no, ainakin enemmän kuin novitalla ;-)

I love your log cabin squares and your exquisite color choices. I might be catching the "log cabin" bug, but I dread sewing them together. Look forward to seeing your finished blanket. Will you please share your finishing techniques as well?

Ohh, I hate when that happens. I actually bought some Brittany needles this weekend and had two of them brake before I got back home. Granted, they're not as expensive, but it's still upsetting. I'm also a tight sock knitter, but still...if they make them in sizes 0 and 1, they know what those are for.

The blanket is coming along so nicely. Can't wait to see the bigger one.

Yay, you caught a fish. I remember the first time I caught a decent fish. I felt like a pro. :D

I found your link on the clothesknit site and really like your work. I'm new to knitting and don't have a blog, but love the color choices in your log cabin blanket.

Kiitos tilkkukehuista ja kalaonnitteluista ja puikkosympatiasta ja lankasuosituksista! :-)

Thank you again for your comments! I feel a bit better now, knowing I'm not the only one who breaks these needles. Thank you for the compliments about my squares and the fish too. :-D

barb outside boston: Thanks for the tip! :-) , Yes, Musti is definately related to mustaa (black in Finnish is musta). Cat named Musti sounds quite funny to me, because it's a common name for a dog here in Finland. :-D
