With and without

Gentleman's Shooting Stockings

Gentleman's Shooting Stockings
by Nancy Bush
Pattern source: Knitting Vintage Socks / Nancy Bush
Yarn: The Knittery 4ply Sock: Merino, in shade chocolate
Needles: 2,25 mm

I've been struggling with blogging lately. I don't know... should I be blogging if the only thing I can think of writing is "I've made two pairs of socks, one with heels and toes, and one without"? Yeah, I don't think so either. But still, here I am.

Yoga Socks

Yoga Socks
by Claire Herne
Pattern source: Yarns International
Yarn: Sock yarn scraps
Needles: 2,5 mm
Modifications: Cast on 60 sts instead of 48

I've been fantasizing about deleting the whole thing. My old entries make me cringe – so much bad writing, especially if I've tried to be funny. (Eww. I'm so sorry about all the bad jokes!) And yes, this is my stupid "no use of trying if you can't be perfect" side kicking in. That same annoying side that made me stop drawing, and playing the piano. Because others do it better. (I'll be 36 this year, shouldn't I know better already? Please don't answer this question.)

Gentleman's Shooting Stockings

But even with having absolutely nothing to say, I still can't bring myself to delete this little blog of mine. Can't live with it, can't live without it I suppose. But if some day my perfectionism takes over, and this blog stops being, I just want to let you know that it survived this long because of you. Thank you all for reading, and commenting, and being such nice people.

And hey, guess what – now I have a whole entry without any real content! Amazing!

Terhi,

please don't delete the blog. I understand how you feel about not feeling inspired to write sometimes, and I know sometimes it's just easier to upload the finished objects on Ravelry and call it a day. BUT, I have always enjoyed reading your description about your projects, even if it's only a few sentences. And plus, your images are beautiful :)

Kaikin puolin. Oli sanottavaa tahi ei.

Yours is actually one of my favorite blogs, I'd be really sad to see it go. Don't stop blogging because you feel like it's not good enough (because it's great) but if you just don't feel like blogging any more... well, that's a different story.

A picture is worth 1000 words. You have lots to say.

The Yoga socks are brilliant- my feet always get cold, but I need that heel & toe traction. Thanks for the excellent idea.

We would be so disappointed not to have your blog - if you did nothing but share your work with us, yours would still be a favorite site of mine because your work is so very beautiful. I subscribe to many many blogs, but yours is at the top, because of the beauty of your finished knits. You have a gift, and I hope you will continue to bless us with it!

Perfectionism is highly overrated. I look forward to your entries and hope you won't stop.

I love your projects, and since I also knit socks almost exclusively, your posts are interesting to me. I like to see which patterns and yarns you're using. I have some of that Knittery merino in mostly green with a little bit of purple and red. I love the yarn, and I'm really interested to see how long your socks got... must be good yardage. All important information for the knitters out there. Don't quit.

Gorgeous socks, both pairs, but I love the chocolate ones :-), and to me, that is content worthy of a post. Please don't stop -- even though I don't think I've commented before, I love visiting.

I hope you won't stop blogging - I'm always happy to see an update from you! (Even if I've never commented before...)

Yours is one of my favourites too Tehri, but I understand that blogging is a (perhaps paradoxically?) deeply personal thing and I would respect your reasons for not doing it (even if I would be sad)

I love your blog. Yours is the reason I caved and signed myself up at Bloglines. I didn't want to miss a single FO or progress shot. :)

I don't think there's many people who grade knit bloggers on their writing prowess. (If they do I'm in hot water.) It's about the knits. And, my dear, yours are definitely among the most inspiring.

I agree - I would miss you if you disappeared. I too love your posts. You make such lovely things and you're very real ... you speak about the perfect moments and the less perfect moments. In the end though, you’ve got to do it for you and not for us. But of course, you know that not everything requires dialogue. Socks with feet in them speak for themselves. I love the yoga socks.

For those of us who tend to wear a lot of black and grey, knitted socks are sometimes our only expression of color. Your socks are PERFECT, and definitely not to be deleted.

Totta puhuen, blogisi on mielettömän hyvä!

At 11:54 ap., Anonymous ZhiWen said...

Do keep on blogging, you really are an inspiration to many people! I love the things you make, and again you have gone and done it: knit socks that I would love to go and cast on :)

And what if you slipped in a comment that was not entirely comedian-worthy funny, just proves you're perfectly human :)

Hmm.. yoga socks are comfortable on the mat? Or make the practice more slippery?

I was at a yoga retreat this weekend and the instructor told us to think about the person we love the most in the world and think about how that feels. Then, try to think of your self with that same feeling and treat your self as you would treat that person. Would you expect that perfectionism from them? Then why expect if from yourself?

More on topic, I love your projects and your entries on them. When the aggregator shows a new entry for Mustaa villaa your entry is among the first I read.

Kaunis väri siinä on!

Like everyone else, I love your blog. I'm so happy when I see your name in bold in my bloglines.

I can understand if you don't want to do it anymore because it can be a pain in the butt sometimes. I too run out of things to say, find it difficult to get good conditions for photos, etc... But please don't quit because you're not perfect enough. Otherwise, why do anything in life? No one is perfect, but what is clear from all the people who commented here is that your blog is beautiful, interesting and inspiring.

I can understand how you feel, I struggle with perfectionism as well, or loss of words, and sometimes I take really long blogging breaks. But whenever I think about stopping, I realize I'll miss this little community and the people I've "known" for years now. Yours was one of the first blogs I've started to read, and is one of the first I scan my bloglines for. Whether it's about socks, little Onni, or pictures of Finland, I enjoy it all!

At 1:46 ip., Blogger piua said...

Voi elä lopeta! Sun blogi on yksi niistä harvoista joiden päivityksen nähdessäni tulen todella iloiseksi.

My blog was deleted by my beloved web host, Startlogic, so I never needed to even think about making a decision myself. I was quite angry for a while, and I still haven't gained enough energy to start completely over with a new blog. Not that my blog was anything that special or popular, but it was still mine. And I certainly like reading yours, and I would be sorry to see it go.
